The token compilation CD for American Idol Season 9 Top 10 is scheduled to be out on May 11.
Music from the Top 10 hopefuls as seen on the Idol stage are showcased in this brand new CD.
We’re not enthused with the song selections!!
We would have picked “Rhiannon” for Didi. Nonetheless, “Play with Fire” is one great Rolling Stone track! Her rendition was a breakthrough moment seeing another side of her that was pure sassy and fi–re!!
Siobhan’s “Paint it Black” ‘broadway/theatrical arrangement was all too weird for us the first time and seem out of place on this CD, while we cringe at the very thought of hearing Aaron Kelly’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” again! This Aerosmith power ballad is beautiful, but is just way too overdone on Idol (sang 6 out of 9 seasons!) and Aaron’s version is not one to remember either. Katie Steven’s “Let it Be”? Not even close to Brooke White’s version or of recent Kris Allen’s live version on Idol…
Oh and the most disturbing track of all is Tim Urban’s reggae arrangement of “Under my Thumb.” C’mmon now Idol, this version should be thrown down the deepest ocean and never to be heard of again…Why immortalize it on a CD?!
[ In fairness to Tim, he made us like the overplayed/over-covered Elvis piece again: “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by doing it on acoustics- that was his best performance on American Idol! We liked it live so we bought the track on iTunes! The Studio version wasn’t all acoustic, and have that original old 60’s feel. We thought the idea was to make the song current– so here we are yet again disappointed with how different live versions are with the studio recordings on Idol. We often feel robbed each time we shell out $1.29 per song on iTunes when it’s not what we expect!! ]
Thumbs up for song selections on this album: Didi, Lee, Crystal, Casey, Andrew and Michael. Michael never won us over from day one but we can listen to “Ready for Love” because the vocals and interpretation of it was affecting. We’ll skip on Tim, Siobhan, Aaron and Katie!
