Tour Review Auburn Hills, MI: 'Idol' summer tour lacks star performer

By Adam Graham, The Detroit News

Pretty much everyone agrees that it was an off year for “American Idol.” And so it goes with the “American Idols Live!” summer tour, which kicked off at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Thursday and reminded fans that yep, it was an off year for “American Idol.”

The signs were visible even outside the building, as the parking lot was far emptier than it is for a typical Palace concert. And inside the venue, the entire upper deck was curtained off, a surefire sign of a dud concert.

(Venue officials didn’t make crowd figures available, but an educated guesstimate pegs attendance at between 8,000 and 9,000, or less than two-thirds of the building’s capacity.)

What was missing from the show was the same thing that was missing from the season: A blockbuster, knock-your-socks-off performer. “Idol” had one in 2009 with Adam Lambert, an over-the-top house-on-fire with a voice that could rattle the rafters of an arena and a sensational sense of style to match. This year’s performers, especially top two contestants Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, couldn’t compare, and the show — just like the season’s ratings — suffered.

DeWyze’s five-song, 20-minute set — which came near the close of the 165-minute concert — was like the coronation of the guy who lived at the end of your dorm hall who could play guitar pretty well. He seems like a good guy, the kind who if you called to help you move would give up his Saturday without question, but he’s severely lacking in star quality. His set included capable renditions of U2’s “Beautiful Day,” Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” and Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” but lacked any real spark. It didn’t do much to dissuade popular belief that he’s going to be a dull “Idol,” and the empty seats in the back of the arena by the time he went on proved he’s facing a long road ahead.

Meanwhile, Bowersox’s folky, earthy vibe didn’t easily translate to an arena setting, and she seemed dwarfed by the size of the venue. She played to the first few rows of the audience at the expense of the back of the arena, especially when she sat down on stage at the opening of “Up to the Mountain.” Bowersox is an open mic night performer who has been thrust into a role she was arguably never meant for, which is going to make her transition to the spotlight difficult. In an intimate setting she would be excellent, able to touch every person in the room, but her strengths are not suited to basketball arenas.

The rest of the show unfolded in unspectacular fashion. Michael Lynche and Casey James’ sets came and went, with the latter’s feeling as inconsistent as his stint on the show. (He’s a better guitarist than he is a singer.) Lynche’s take on Justin Timberlake and TI’s “My Love” was the riskiest song choice of the evening, with Lynche taking on both Timberlake’s falsetto and TI’s bracing rap, though he wasn’t able to physically sell the song and seemed worn out by its close.

The evening’s most pleasant surprise was Aaron Kelly, whose confident, assured vocals came off better than they did on the small screen. He didn’t lean on any songs he performed on the show, proving there’s more to him than just facsimiles of previous performances, and he sounds like he’s on his way to a viable country career.

Spooky-weird goth art student Siobhan Magnus had the night’s oddest performance, moving from her high-drama take on the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black” into an unconvincingly sunny spin on No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs.” “Spiderwebs” seems to go against everything Magnus is about, and her performance of it almost seemed like a goof, but it was hard to tell whom the joke was on. She closed with Muse’s “Stockholm Syndrome,” which is much more her speed, and finished on her knees, screaming at the ceiling.

Seventeen-year-old Katie Stevens proved to be the evening’s most current performer, ably working through spirited takes on Demi Lovato’s “Here We Go Again” and Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter.” Heartthrob Tim Urban smiled his way through Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days” and Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida.”

“Remember me?” contestants Didi Benami and Andrew Garcia kicked the evening off with short, two-song sets, the latter of which included the cover of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” which haunted Garcia throughout his time on the show.

The evening closed with a group sing-along to Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You,” a sentiment fans might not share with this crop of “Idols.”

Tour Review Auburn Hills, MI: “American Idol” finalists push the envelope at tour opener

by Gary Graff, Detroit Of the Oakland Press

Coming off a ratings-challenged season that faced harsh criticism of its talent and failed to produce a substantial hit for either of its top two finishers, the American Idols Live! Tour 2010 hit the road Thursday night (July 1) with perhaps something more to prove than some of its previous incarnations.

And while the 33-song revue, weighing in at two hours and 50 minutes (with a 20-minute intermission) was both exhaustive and exhausting, thinning out a significant portion of the crowd at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit by the time Season 9 champ Lee DeWyze hit the stage, it did establish that some of this year’s top 10 merit consideration.

But first, a note to DeWyze and “Big” Michael Lynche, both of whom called for the folks “up top” to sing along during their sets; that top tier of the half-filled arena was, in fact, completely curtained off. Then again, maybe DeWyze realized that when he noted “I feel like everybody can use somebody once in awhile” before his version of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.”

What distinguished this year’s Idols Live! show was a greater willingness to push the proverbial envelope and be bold in song selection. Following the usual sponsor ads and win-a-backstage-pass texting contests, Didi Benami opened the night with a surprising pair of obscure numbers — the moody “Lay It on Me” by Los Angeles indie rockers the Rescues and “Terrified,” a song co-writen by “Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi for Season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee’s latest album, which came out in January. The show’s two 17-year-olds — Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelly — ditched their older-leaning TV repertoires entirely. Stevens, fresh from her high school graduation the previous week, took on Demi Lovato’s “Here We Go Again” and Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter,” while Kelly, smooth beyond his years, glided through Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You,” a Lonestar-leaning arrangement of Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis” (accompanied by vintage Elvis Presley home movie footage) and Rascal Flatts’ “Fast Cars & Freedom.”

Siobhan Magnus followed her gothic take of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It, Black” with a jarring transition into No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs” and an emotive, Evanescence-d rendition of Muse’s “Stockholm Syndrome.” Tim Urban treated Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” to an arrangement more akin to the Goo Goo Dolls (whose “Better Days” he also performed), and Lynche sang and rapped a smoothed-over version of Justin Timberlake’s “My Love.” Casey James, meanwhile, played guitar hero on a searing romp through the Black Keys’ “I Got Mine.”

Runner-up Crystal Bowersox, cheered on by a healthy delegation from her nearby home town of Toledo (where the tour stops Sept. 2) was confident, but understated as she finally got to perform Four Non Blondes “What’s Up” after weeks of lobbying writer Linda Perry along with Melissa Etheridge’s “Come to My Window,” Patti Griffin’s “Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)” and a gliding version of the diva staple “Piece of My Heart.” And the leather-jacketed DeWyze was his earnest, heartland rocker self with his re-tooled rendition of U2’s “Beautiful Day,” a rocked-up take on the Temptations’ “Treat Her Like a Lady” and a guitar-heavy treatment of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” that segued into a bit of Pink Floyd’s “Welcome to the Machine.”

The ensemble numbers, however, remained somewhat milquetoast, whether it was the first six performers teaming up for Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” or the male Idols encoring with Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” before joining the women for inaugural “Idol” champ Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Doubted as they’ve been, the Idols Live! opener faced down and even belied some of the abundant “Idol” bashing that went on this year.

7/1 American Idol 9 Top 10 Live Tour Coverage: The Palace in Auburn Hills, MI (PHOTOS)

UPDATED: We are getting tons of live updates on Twitter. [Keep checking. We will collect videos and photos as soon as people share them.]

Well, maybe we were exaggerating on that. It seemed like there were a lot of Twitter entries but it has dwindled down after a while. Since we have not followed the tour in anyway before, we don’t have a baseline. However from what we gather, this is NOW OFFICIALLY THE SLOWEST, WEAKEST AI TOUR in its history. Not too many buzz from fans and the media.

According to Brian Mansfield of USA Today’s Idol Chatter: “The Palace is configured for about 14,000 for a show like this, but nearly the entire upper level is curtained off. The Detroit critics by me say that means the show’s probably pulling between 8,000 and 9,000.” We wrote earlier that depending on its layout, The Palace can seat up to 23,000. If the 8k estimate is true, that’s not even half the capacity and we have yet to hear if the house is packed…

From Toledo Blade‘s estimates: “American Idol Live kicked off last night at The Palace of Auburn Hills before a crowd of about 7,500 people — mostly teenagers and mostly female — in the 14,000-seat venue.”

We found nice photos from Life.com and Zimbio.com. All rights go to them and to photographers: Mark Cunningham and Bill Pugliano for Getty Images and WireImage. Unfortunately, this was more like a Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox concert so they get the media love. We are hoping Didi fans will contribute their pics to this site. Scroll down below…

The Idols are heading to Milwaukee, WI next for the Summerfest , July 2nd- their second stop!

– o –

This we learned so far: The door officially opened at 5pm. The show’s supposed to start at 7:30 but they’re running late. “Something is going down. The video reel even stopped,” says @desilove She adds: “small stage this year. No catwalk or wings” @Lover_of_sushi shares her view of the concert, “Didi benami singing now,” she captions.

@Adambandaids says: “Didi @dbenami is killing it on stage right now!”

There is a 20-minute intermission to the 2-hour show.

Finally the set list of the tour. Songs revealed!
